What your quote actually includes
A Careful Movers quote is the full cost of the job, not a vehicle hire rate with extras added later. It covers the truck and the fuel, a trained permanent crew rather than day labour, blankets, straps and protective wrapping, dismantling and reassembly of beds and standard flat-pack furniture, and Goods in Transit insurance on everything we carry. If a quote you are comparing is materially cheaper, the difference is almost always one of those five things missing rather than a better rate.
What actually changes the price
Volume is the main driver, not the number of bedrooms — two three-bedroom homes can differ by half a truck depending on how much is in them. After that it is access: stairs, a long carry from the vehicle, a lift that has to be booked, or a complex that only permits moves in certain hours. Distance matters on interprovincial moves, where pricing is based on the space your goods occupy over the route. Timing is the one most people can control: month-end and the December to January peak are the most expensive weeks of the year to move.
A written fixed quote, not an estimate
The most common complaint in this industry is a price that grows once the truck is loaded, because the original number was an estimate based on an assumption rather than a quote based on a declared inventory. We quote in writing and the figure we agree is the figure you pay, unless you add to the load. When comparing any quote, ask three questions: is it based on the volume you actually declared, is it fixed or an estimate, and what insurance applies and to what limit. An outlier low price nearly always means one of those has been left vague. The warning signs are set out in how to avoid moving scams.
How quickly you will hear back
Most quotes go out the same working day. A small load or a one-bedroom flat can usually be priced straight off your item list or a few photos. Larger homes, offices and anything with specialist items are quoted after a short video walkthrough or an on-site survey, which we can normally arrange within a day or two. Month-end is the exception in both directions — it is when quote volumes peak and when the calendar fills, so if you are moving on the last weekend of a month it is worth asking early rather than close to the date.
Local, long-distance and office quotes
Local moves within a metro are priced on the size of your home and the access at both ends rather than the kilometres travelled. Long-distance moves are priced on volume and the route, and you can choose a shared load, where your goods travel with other consignments and you pay only for your share of the vehicle, or a dedicated truck on your own dates. Office relocations are quoted differently again, planned backwards from your reopening time so the business loses the least trading. If your dates are not fixed yet
You do not need a confirmed date to get a quote, and it is worth getting one early. Property transfer dates slip constantly, and a quote in hand means you are not negotiating a price under time pressure in the same week you have to vacate. If your dates end up not aligning at all, tell us and we will price storage alongside the move — arranged upfront it costs a fraction of what it costs arranged mid-move with a loaded truck waiting.

Normally 30 days. Fuel and vehicle costs move, and month-end and December pricing differs from mid-month, so a quote for a date months out is confirmed closer to the time.
Only adding to the load, or access that turns out to be materially different from what was described — a lift that is out, or a truck that cannot reach the door. Both are avoidable by being accurate at quoting stage, which is why we ask about stairs, complexes and parking upfront.

Yes, both are quoted as part of the same job rather than as separate contractors. That matters for insurance too — items we pack are covered for breakage, and there is no gap in cover between the move and any storage period.
