The Complete Moving House Checklist for South Africa (Free Timeline)

Everything to do, in the order to do it, from eight weeks out to moving day.

By the Careful Movers Team · Updated August 2026

Almost every stressful move has the same cause: things that needed six weeks got two days. This is a realistic, South Africa-specific checklist built from thousands of moves — including the change-of-address list that people only remember when something stops working.

8 weeks before: decide and book

  • Confirm your dates. Occupation date, transfer date and lease end rarely align perfectly. Identify the gap now, not later.
  • Get quotes. Three is sensible. Make sure each covers the same scope, crew size and insurance.
  • Book your mover. Month-end, December and January book out first.
  • Start decluttering. You pay to move volume. Begin with the garage, the spare room and the roof space — where things accumulate unseen.
  • Give notice to your landlord if renting, in writing, per your lease notice period.

6 weeks before: sort and plan

  • Decide what you are selling, donating, disposing of or keeping. Be decisive — “maybe” boxes get moved twice.
  • Book disposal or removal of anything you are letting go
  • Arrange storage if your dates leave a gap
  • Decide on packing: full, partial or self-pack. Order materials if self-packing.
  • Check whether your new home has any access restrictions — estate rules, lift bookings, permitted moving hours

4 weeks before: the admin block

This is the change-of-address work, and it is bigger than most people expect. Work through it in one focused session:

Financial

  • Bank accounts and credit cards
  • Medical aid and gap cover
  • Short-term insurance — critical, because household contents cover is address-specific and may be invalid at the new address if not updated
  • Life and funeral policies
  • Retirement annuities and investment providers
  • SARS (eFiling profile)

Government and municipal

  • Municipality — close the old account and open the new one (do not assume this happens automatically)
  • Electricity and prepaid meter registration
  • Water and refuse accounts
  • Home Affairs, if your ID address matters for your circumstances
  • Voter registration (IEC)
  • Vehicle licence and registration details

Services and subscriptions

  • Fibre or ADSL provider — book the new line early, lead times can be weeks
  • DStv or streaming decoder relocation
  • Mobile provider billing address
  • Security or armed response company — both cancellation and new installation
  • Online shopping and courier delivery addresses
  • Any subscription boxes or regular deliveries

Personal

  • Schools — transfer letters and records
  • Doctor, dentist, optometrist, vet — request records if you are moving far
  • Employer HR and payroll
  • Gym, clubs and memberships
  • Family, friends and anyone who posts you anything

2 weeks before: prepare

  • Start packing non-essentials. Books, out-of-season clothes, decor, spare linen, garage items.
  • Label properly. Room name plus contents plus “FRAGILE” where relevant. Label the side of the box, not just the top — boxes get stacked.
  • Photograph electronics cabling before unplugging, and valuable items for insurance purposes.
  • Run down your fridge, freezer and pantry. Do not move perishables.
  • Service and defrost the fridge and freezer 24–48 hours before — a wet fridge on a truck is a genuine problem.
  • Arrange pet and plant transport separately. These do not travel on a removals truck.
  • Confirm childcare or pet care for moving day. Moving day with toddlers underfoot is unsafe and slow.

1 week before: confirm

  • Reconfirm the move time, address and contact details with your movers
  • Confirm access, parking, gate codes and lift bookings at both ends
  • Pack your essentials box and keep it with you — not on the truck
  • Withdraw a little cash for incidentals
  • Arrange cleaning of the property you are vacating
  • Do a final utilities meter reading plan for handover day

Your essentials box should contain

Documents and IDs, medication, chargers and cables, a change of clothes per person, toiletries, toilet paper, basic tools, a kettle, mugs, tea and coffee, snacks, cleaning cloths, bedding for the first night, and the keys to everything.

Moving day

  • Be there at the start to walk the crew through the house
  • Point out fragile, valuable and priority items explicitly
  • Keep pets and small children safely out of the working area
  • Do a final sweep of every room, cupboard, roof space and the garage before the truck leaves
  • Take meter readings and photograph them
  • Check the inventory before signing
  • Keep phones charged — you will need them

First week in the new home

  • Unpack the essentials box, then beds, then kitchen — in that order
  • Check for any transit damage and report it promptly so a claim can be handled properly (see how claims work)
  • Test smoke alarms, geyser, security system and all door locks — consider changing the locks
  • Locate the water shut-off, distribution board and main switch
  • Register with local schools, doctor and vet if you have moved area
  • Introduce yourself to neighbours — genuinely useful for security and local knowledge

Documents, jewellery, medication, keys, laptops and anything irreplaceable should travel with you personally. Flammables and gas bottles cannot be transported.

As a rough guide: 20–30 for a one-bedroom, 40–60 for a two to three bedroom, 80+ for a large family home. Always get more than you think.

Yes — full or partial packing. Most families choose partial: we handle the fragile, awkward and valuable items and you do the simple boxes. See packing services.
