How Much Does It Cost to Move House in South Africa? (2026 Guide)

What a local, long-distance and office move really costs in 2026 — and what moves the number.

By the Careful Movers Team · Updated August 2026

Moving is one of those costs almost nobody budgets for properly. People plan for the deposit, the transfer fees and the new curtains, then get a moving quote and wonder whether it is reasonable. This guide gives you honest, realistic numbers for what a house move costs in South Africa in 2026, explains every factor that moves the price up or down, and shows you where you can genuinely save without cutting corners that matter.

Quick answer: typical South African moving costs in 2026

There are two very different pricing worlds: local moves (within a city or metro) and long-distance moves (between provinces). Local moves are priced mainly on the size of your home and the access at both ends. Long-distance moves are priced on the volume of your goods and the route.

Move type Typical example Indicative 2026 price
Small load Student move, a few items, bachelor flat from R1,500
1-bedroom, local Flat or small apartment within the metro from R1,990
2–3 bedroom, local Typical family home within the metro from R3,350
4+ bedroom, local Large home or estate property from R6,990
Long-distance, shared load Sharing truck space on a set route R6,000 – R15,000
Long-distance, dedicated truck Your goods only, direct, date-specific R15,000 – R35,000+

These are indicative ranges to help you budget, not quotes. Your actual price depends on volume, access and date — get a free quote for an accurate figure.

What actually drives the price of your move

Understanding these seven factors lets you read any quote intelligently and spot when one is unrealistically cheap.

1. Volume, not just number of rooms

Two three-bedroom houses can differ enormously. One family has minimal furniture; another has a double garage packed to the roof, a piano and a workshop. Reputable movers price on volume (cubic metres), which is why a proper inventory or a survey gives a far more accurate quote than a phone estimate.

2. Distance and route

For local moves distance matters less than you would expect — it is mostly time and labour. For long-distance moves the route is the single biggest driver, because it determines fuel, tolls, driver hours and whether the truck can pick up a return load.

3. Access at both ends

This is the factor most people forget, and it is the most common reason a quote changes on the day. Things that add cost:

  • Stairs — especially third floor and above with no lift
  • Long carry — if the truck cannot park near the door
  • Narrow or steep driveways that a large truck cannot enter, requiring a shuttle vehicle
  • Complex and estate rules — restricted moving hours, security check-in delays, booked lift slots

Always tell your mover about access issues upfront. A good company would rather quote correctly than surprise you.

4. Packing services

Packing is usually the biggest optional line item. Full packing (a crew packs everything for you) typically adds R2,500–R8,000+ depending on house size. Partial packing — where the movers handle only the fragile, awkward items like glassware, artwork and electronics — is the sweet spot for most families. See our packing and wrapping services.

5. Special items

Pianos, safes, pool tables, large fridges, gym equipment, antiques and oversized artwork need extra people, extra equipment and sometimes specialised protection. Declare them upfront; they are routine for an equipped company but genuinely dangerous for an underequipped one.

6. Timing

Demand in South Africa spikes at month-end, over December/January, and around the school calendar. Moving mid-month and mid-week is consistently cheaper and gets you better crews, because the best teams are not stretched across three jobs.

7. Insurance and storage

Reputable movers carry Goods in Transit (GIT) cover. Additional all-risk cover for high-value items is available and worth it for expensive electronics or antiques. If your dates do not line up, storage is billed separately, usually monthly by volume.

Local vs long-distance: how pricing logic differs

For a local move, you are essentially buying a truck and a crew for a day. Price is driven by how long the job takes and how many people it needs.

For a long-distance move, you are buying space on a vehicle travelling a route. This is why you have two options:

  • Shared load — your goods share the truck with other customers on the same route. Much cheaper, but delivery is within a date window rather than a fixed day.
  • Dedicated truck — the vehicle carries only your goods, direct, on your date. More expensive, but fastest and least handled.

We explain the trade-offs in detail in shared vs dedicated loads.

Hidden costs people forget to budget for

  • Packing materials if you are self-packing — boxes, tape, bubble wrap and blankets add up fast
  • Cleaning the property you are vacating, often required by the lease
  • Storage if transfer dates slip, which happens more often than people expect
  • Utility connections and deposits at the new property
  • Time off work — a full-day move usually costs you a leave day
  • Meals on moving day, because nobody is cooking that night

Seven realistic ways to reduce your moving cost

  1. Declutter ruthlessly first. You pay to move volume. Selling, donating or disposing of what you do not want is the single biggest saving available. Our furniture disposal service can handle what you are letting go.
  2. Move mid-month, mid-week. Avoid the month-end crush.
  3. Pack the easy things yourself. Books, linen, clothes and kitchenware are simple. Let professionals do the fragile items.
  4. Consider a shared load for long-distance if your dates are flexible.
  5. Get an accurate inventory in early. Surprises on the day cost far more than they would have in the quote.
  6. Sort access in advance. Book the lift, clear the driveway, arrange estate access and gate codes.
  7. Compare like with like. Three quotes is sensible — but check each includes the same services, insurance and crew size.

Why the cheapest quote is often the most expensive

An unusually low quote almost always means one of these: no GIT insurance, an untrained casual crew, a vehicle too small (so it takes two trips you get billed for), or a “quote” that becomes a much larger invoice once they have your goods on the truck. The industry’s worst outcomes — damaged furniture, goods held for extra payment, no recourse — nearly always start with the cheapest quote.

Before booking anyone, confirm: Do they have GIT cover? Are the crew trained employees? Is the quote fixed or an estimate? Is there a written agreement? Do they have real, recent reviews?
